Summer GIFin’ had me a blast

June 19th, 2012 by Ben

Another summer themed lady drawing.  Decided to go the extra mile with this one and make it into a little animated GIF.  It’s kind of hypnotic.  She just eats and eats and never stops.

Some people have been doing some pretty sweet things with GIFs and web comics lately, so I thought I’d play around with them too.  You know, see if I could be mediocre at something else.

It took me a hot minute to figure out how to export this GIF correctly.  I drew it in Photoshop, then brought it into After Effects to time out the animation.  I tried exporting an animated GIF straight from there, but After Effects would NOT give me the correct colors without having dithering turned on.  If you’re not in the know, GIFs can only hold a limited number of colors.  So you have to scale back your palette or use dithering which makes it look all grainy.  The grainy thing can look cool sometimes, but it just wasn’t what I was going for.  Check it:

I ended up exporting a PICT sequence from After Effects and then importing that into this program GIFfun.  It turned out looking pretty close to the original drawing.  If you’re trying to do the same, just remember to set your frame rate correctly in GIFfun.  For example, if you want the image sequence to playback 24fps, the delay should be set to 4 1/100 seconds.  There’s probably better programs/ways to accomplish this, I just didn’t feel like paying/pirating something just to make a GIF.  But if anyone has better suggestions, let me know.
